Chemistry Lab Safety

I guess so. This portion of my site is for chemistry-related stuff, and will go over various topics such as Lab safety, and important concepts.

Background

Chemistry is the study of reactions between different items of matter, both natural and man-made.

Working efficiently in Lab

Most of the time, chemical study is done in a lab environment.

Lab environments are the perfect place to study chemistry using a hands-on approach. However, in order for experiments to be done safely and effectively, one must adhere to some basic safety rules.

The wording of these may change depending on who your teacher/professor/lab instructor is but here are the basics:

-Be Prepared. Come to class/lab on time and prepared, with all Pre-Lab work that needs to be completed prior to the experiment finished and all necessary materials brought to the lab. Also, you may be quizzed on the lab content before starting, so study up!

-Dress Appropriately. You don't need to dress in any special way, but appropriate clothing should be worn. In many lab settings, mostly in higher education, you would be required to wear a lab coat/apron, protective goggles, and non-latex gloves while performing the experiment. Avoid wearing baggy or loose clothing, as it may inhibit your movement by making you trip or walk funny. Avoid wearing revealing clothing, since broken glass or a chemical could come in contact with your skin resulting in severe injury. Long hair should be tied back- either with a hair tie, or if you do not have one handy, a rubber band.

-Be Safe. The lab is a workplace; it is not the place to fool around. Always be aware of your surroundings. Do not run, skip, or jump around in the lab. Fighting or Roughhousing is ABSOLUTELY PROHIBITED.

-Managing Accidents. Report any broken glassware or chemical spills to your instructor. Know and understand your lab class' plan for evacuation in case of an emergency (Fire, Eathquake, or any other Natural Disasters).
